The sculpting procedure that Nesse utilizes is a straightforward attempt to control the various formal elements of a particular automobile. He begins with the wheel for that particular car. The example depicted is the Speed Six Bentley Coupe. A wheel pattern is "turned" in a small lathe, out of a composite plastic material. All of the round elements of the wheel are cut into the pattern. A rubber mold is made from this pattern and a wax pattern is poured when the mold is finished. The wax is then sculpted to depict spokes and tire detail. When the wheel design is complete, another mold is made, and this produces the finished wheel pattern for casting.
